Black Flag, although it is first and foremost a pirate game, still does assassinations better than its predecessors. So even though I feel more like a pirate than an assassin this time around, the better stealth makes me (ironically, perhaps) feel more like an assassin, too. There are even stealth mechanics built in to swimming and sailing. You can sneak your way through entire assassination contracts if you want to, and it's quite rewarding.

Sneaking through bushes and across overhanging branches is fluid and intuitive and, most importantly, a lot of fun. Assassin's Creed has always had a thin veneer of stealth gameplay, but it's been expanded in Black Flag to become a really integral (if still optional) piece of the puzzle. Perhaps even more surprising is the stealth in this game. But this is still a big improvement over past titles. Can I imagine a more compelling swordfighting game? Of course. The sword fights feel right at home on the high seas. I think the combat is also more palatable than prior entries because I feel like I'm playing a pirate rather than an assassin. You're still basically a super-hero compared to the poor soldiers and bandits whose paths so unfortunately cross your own, but the challenge and fluidity of fights have both been improved to the point where I'm actually having quite a lot of fun swashbuckling my bloody path.Įnemies will still stand around a bit too much, but they'll gang up on you a bit more than in the past as well, and muskets can provide a real complication to an otherwise successful sword fight. Even the combat-which I so often complain is lackluster in Assassin's Creed games-has seen a marked improvement.

The systems of hunting, trade, and crafting have all been refined. I'd go further and say an improvement over the entire franchise. It's a massive title, and it feels confined by the current generation console.īasically everything about Black Flag is an improvement over both last year's entry. The graphics on PS3 are fantastic, but I can't wait for the next-gen versions of the game. Moments of intense action followed by these wonderfully peaceful moments of exploration or gawking.
